12V Line Hauler | Trap Hauler

by admin on June 30, 2009

If you have ever pulled up lobster traps by hand you know it isn’t fun or easy.  Unfortunatly line haulers found on commercial vessels are generally large and very expensive.  For smaller recreational vessels it just isn’t a practical option.  I have a ten pot non-commercial lobster pot  license and I hauled my traps by hand for several years because I didn’t know I had other (reasonable) options.   I use two brick 24×36 wire construction lobster traps with each trap on a single line and buoy usually in 50 ft of water.

Most recreational fishing vessels are not well set up for the addition of a line hauler and my boat was no exception.  Then I found the Ace Line Hauler BRUTUS .  It is powered by a Hi-Torque 12V Motor that hauls up traps with minimal assistance (up to 100 pounds).  The unit connects to a Scotty downrigger mount and plugs into a Scotty® 12V downrigger receptacle .  It is easy to operate alone and is small enough to stow away in the cabin. The product marketed for use with prawn or crab traps but since my gear is well under the 100lb limit I figured I’d give it a try.  I have been pulling my traps with it now for three seasons.  I had a problem during season two with the on/off switch on the 12v motor.  I damaged the switch by my own stupidity and admitted as much to the person I spoke with at ACE when I called for help.  They shipped a new switch overnight for FREE.  Great product, great customer service,  I can’t say enough good things about this product or the company.  If you are still breaking your back pulling traps by hand you should consider this product as an addition for your vessel.  Lobsters taste better when you don’t have to work so hard to get them.
