The mackerel fishing is starting to heat up. Schools of fish are showing up in good numbers off the coast of Duxbury and Marshfield. Jigging with a sabiki rig you can expect to catch a few hundred in a short amount of time if you can keep them beside the boat. May 24th, 2011 off the coast of Duxbury near Gurnet Light I found large schools of tinker macs in 50ft of water. The water temps are still pretty cold (51 degrees) but apparently it is warm enough.

Mackerel is versatile bait. I’ll freeze a few hundred to be used for lobster bait. A select group of the larger mackerel will be soaked in brine, hydro gutted, and rigged for tuna fishing. I always try to keep live macs in the bait cage but they don’t usually last very long.
