Fresh New England Lobsters - May 2007

The hunt for Fresh New England Lobster has begun. I baited three traps and set them in the water just before the weather turned foul last week and because of the bad weather I wasn’t able to get back out in the water to check the traps for 5 days. All three traps were empty when I returned. Nothing had even touched the bait, not even a crab.

I moved all three traps into shallower water (about 35 feet) to see if my luck would change and two days later I returned fully expecting to have fresh lobsters for diner but I was disappointed again by empty traps. The bait was still pretty much untouched and very foul smelling at this point.

I re-baited each trap and then returned to my original spot in 50ft of water. I can’t remember one time last year when I pulled the traps and had nothing at all (no small lobsters, crabs…nothing) but so far this year I’ve gone 0 for 2. Granted I only have three lobster traps in the water right now I still expect to see something.

I waited my standard two days before returning to my traps and this time I was hoping for better results. We have had a pretty successful couple of days fishing which included the first keeper striped bass of the season (38 inches, caught by my dad), and a few decent cod. What I really want are some lobsters…and guess what? I got what I wanted. I have 5 decent keeper lobsters, a few small ones and a few eggers this time around. Fresh lobsters for diner tonight!

The fishing was good enough to provide bait for a few more traps. I now have a total of 7 traps in the water. On Monday I got a 3.5 pound lobster and two 1.5 pounders as well as a bunch of shorties. So far so good, you can never have enough fresh lobster.
