Spring Maintenance Mercury 200 EFI Outboard Motor

Yesterday marks the beginning of the 2009 season. I took the cover off the boat Sunday and began working through the long list of stuff that has to be done before the boat gets wet. A quick trip to Bill’s Outboard in Hingham MA was in order. Spark Plugs, plug wires, port and starboard thermostats, fuel filter-water separator, and an impeller kit were all on the short list.

I tested and installed the batteries, cleaned up the terminations and fired her up with the garden hose attached. I let it run a few minutes just to get some of the fog out. I have to admit, even while running rough; it was like the sound of music. I removed the old plugs and installed the new ones replacing each plug wire along the way. Then I replaced the fuel filter-water separator. The port and starboard thermostats were next. I was amazed at how bad the thermostats looked! I didn’t run fresh water through the boat after every use last season and it showed.

I installed zinc anodes in my trim tabs (the other zincs look fine). I’m going to tackle the impeller kit this week. Some bottom paint and a complete clean and wax and I’ll be good two go for 2009.
