Lobster Facts

Lobster Facts:

Did you know lobsters get up to 45 pounds and (it is believed) that they can live as long as 70 years in unfarmed areas?   It takes lobsters an average of 5 to 7 years, depending on the water temperature, to grow to legal size.

Did you know lobsters can regenerate legs, claws, and antennae?  In fact they can and often do amputate their own claws and legs to escape danger.

Fishermen can keep lobsters when the length of the cephalothorax is equal or greater than the minimum size established for their area.  In my area (defined as the “Gulf of Maine Recreational Lobster Area by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries) the minimum size is 3 1/4 inches and the maximum is 5 inches.  The exception being egg-bearing females and v-notched lobsters, which are protected by law, and must be released.
