Rough Waters Massachusetts Bay
We have a significant E to NE wind and high seas all along the Marshfield coastline and beyond today. Wind gusts up to 35kts. and waves 6 to 8ft and with occasional sets in the 12ft range. Emergency crews were working on the Brant Rock sea wall backfilling what looked to be an undermined section. You know it’s rough when you can see decent sized ocean debris on the Ocean St. sidewalk and street.
After having a look at the surf today I would have to say the lobster taps are a loss. I went out on Monday during a small craft advisory to retrieve them without success. Because of the conditions it was difficult to even get out to the traps and when I was where I needed to be, I quickly realized I had no hope of hauling them up. It was obvious the boat would not be stable if it were not underway. In fact every second of my attention was focused on the near horizon making sure to maintain control of the boat at all times. There is a significant rise in the ocean floor where I keep my traps and this creates some rather scary surf when the conditions are as they are now. I made the correct call bailing out on my recovery mission. It just was not worth the risk. It was a lot easier heading in. I was able to ride the waves almost all the way back to Port.
