MA Whale Watching – Finback Whales
Whale watching is an incredible experience that is in a league of its own. If you happen to be in a boat that is dwarfed by the whales the whole show is even more impressive. On our way back from Race Point and a nice day at the beach we were in awe watching Finback whales surface all around us.

It was an especially nice encounter because we had family with us that had never had the pleasure of this awesome spectacle. Finback Whales can get up to 100 feet long. They are the second largest whale in the world, second only to the Blue Whale. It is difficult to say how many there were but if I had to guess I say there were at least 20. Fin whales have a noticeable spout (or blowhole) and each time they surfaced you could hear the enormous exhale and see the upward spray of mist. If you don’t own a boat of your own I’d advise you to hop on a whale watching boat some day. Whale watching boats leave from Plymouth MA, Gloucester MA, and several other locations on and around Cape Code MA. We took some great photos (below) that will give you some idea of what we were watching.
